Big-box store on Big Island’s west side traps opossum
An agriculture inspector from the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture Plant Quarantine Branch in Kona retrieved the animal early Sunday morning and arranged for it to be transported to Honolulu. This was the second opossum in as many months to be captured in the islands.
Injured Illinois visitor rescued from Awaʻawapuhi Trail in Kōke‘e
First responders received the report about the injured hiker just before noon Monday and personnel from the Waimea Fire Station and Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded. Air 1 was unable to access the area because of heavy cloud cover, so Rescue 3 personnel and Waimea firefighters hiked the trail to get to the injured woman.
Lane closures continue through Friday for several Kekaha roadways
Area residents will only be allowed partial access through the closures scheduled through Friday as work continues from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

No injuires or damages to structures were reported. Kaua‘i Fire Department officials estimate the blaze that caused the evacuation of a few homes as a precaution burned fewer than 10 acres.
