Kaua‘i Police Department Officer Myles Mendoza had no idea when he pulled over a driver for not wearing their seatbelt Dec. 21, 2024, in Po‘ipū that the routine traffic stop would lead to keeping a significant amount of cocaine and other dangerous drugs off Garden Isle streets.

Mendoza was recently honored by Kaua‘i Police Commission for his exemplary actions during the traffic stop. He also was named the department’s Employee of the Month for March 2025.

After pulling the vehicle over, the officer discovered the driver had an outstanding bench warrant. Mendoza found a vial of a white powdery substance, which field-tested positive as cocaine, upon a pat down of the driver after placing them under arrest.

He then seized the vehicle as evidence and was able to obtain a search warrant.

A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of an additional 100 grams of cocaine valued at about $3,000, more than $2,000 in cash, crystal methamphetamine, prescription pills and other illegal drug paraphernalia.

Kaua‘i Police Chief Todd Raybuck said his department is proud of Mendoza’s outstanding work and high standard he sets for law enforcement.

“Officer Mendoza’s exceptional work highlights the dedication and vigilance we value in our officers,” said Raybuck in an announcement about Mendoza being honored. “His proactive response was crucial in stopping these drugs from circulating, ultimately safeguarding our families and keiki from their devastating effects.”
