“These findings are significant because aquarium collecting has repeatedly been justified by claims of sustainability and rapid reef fish recovery once harvesting stops,” said For the Fishes Executive Director Rene Umberger. “Those claims are not supported by what actually happened on Hawaiʻi reefs.”

Hawaiʻi’s statewide outdoor warning sirens and Emergency Alert System will undergo the routine monthly test at 11:45 a.m. on Monday.
High surf advisory now in effect for north, west shorelines of Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Honolulu canceled the high surf warning previously in effect for the same shores as overlapping swells are beginning to decline and will continue to do so overnight; coastal flooding also still a concern through Monday afternoon (Feb. 2).
Multi-agency search for missing Kaua‘i man suspended after discovery of human remains
First responders on Saturday located the remains during continued air, land and sea search efforts for 19-year-old Kapa‘a resident Matthew Packard-Asai, who was last seen early Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 28) near Kahili Beach in Kīlauea.

Public advised to take protective actions in response to chickenpox outbreak at Kauaʻi Elementary School
The Hawai‘i Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of chickenpox (varicella) at Kīlauea Elementary School on the island of Kauaʻi. Five cases have been reported in the outbreak to date, including four students at the school and one household member. All five cases were not vaccinated against chickenpox.
