Versions of the bogus letter contain the Kaua‘i County seal and statements regarding illegal use of fireworks, county ordinances, enforcement actions or penalties. Officials stress that this correspondence is not legitimate and did not originate from the council or any county department.

Kaua‘i County Department of Finance reports the text says the person who receives it must satisfy an “E-Z Pass lane debt” to avoid fines and suspension of their driving privileges. It also directs people to a cloned website, where scammers hope to collect their personal and financial information.
