The closure on Hanalei Hill, between Hanalei Plantation Road and ʻŌhiki Road, was delayed because of a shortage of materials and inclement weather; it is necessary for reconstruction of existing pavement on approach to Hanalei Bridge.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, periods of heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, with repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible as deep tropical moisture moves over the island.

Postponed from Monday, Feb. 16, the full closure will take place on Hanalei Hill from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Feb. 23 through Feb. 27.

The weather is expected to continue to improve.

Kauaʻi officials warn residents and visitors of potential severe weather this weekend, as a cold front may bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds that increase flash flood risks.

Transportation officials said the closures are needed to reconstruct existing pavement on the Hanalei side of the bridge.

The National Weather Service forecasts potential heavy rain and a slight chance of thunderstorms that could lead to flash flood conditions.

Based on all available data, a tsunami is not expected to strike the State of Hawai’i.

A tsunami alert, flooding in Hanalei and a road closure due to a traffic accident with injuries hit the North Shore on Saturday and Sunday.

Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency reported the update just before 6 p.m. after the roadway was inundated by flood waters for much of the day as heavy rainfall pounded northern and central parts of the island.

Hanalei Bridge will close nightly from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. next week for necessary construction.

Short, intermittent full closures may be required to remove the larger pieces of debris.

All work is weather permitting. Contingency dates are set for the night of Feb. 22 through the morning of Feb. 23.

The $2.9 million project will replace the timber decking, steel bolts, and corroded steel members of Hanalei Bridge.

Starting Sept. 18, there will be a single lane closure on Kūhiō Highway near Hanalei Plantation Road and the Hanalei Bridge from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Traffic in both directions will be maintained using alternating traffic control. Flaggers will be staged at either end of the work area.

The closure will take place from 11 p.m. Sunday night through 5:30 a.m. Friday.

A cold front is bringing the potential for elevated, gusty Kona winds, heavy rain, and possible strong thunderstorms over Kaua‘i.

A community-run shelter has been opened at Hale Halawai In Hanalei due to flooding on Kauaʻi. 

At 2:02 p.m., an area of strong thunderstorms capable of producing waterspouts was located along a line extending from 15nm south of Kalaheo, Kaua‘i to 35 nm southwest of Kalaeloa, O‘ahu, moving northeast at 15 knots. Individual thunderstorms were moving north at 15 knots.
