The County of Kauaʻi is conducting a collaborative design charrette the week of Jan. 12, 2026, to engage the public and community stakeholders in shaping the future of Haleko Road between Nāwiliwili Road and Rice Street. The County is partnering with the Hawaiʻi Department of Health and the Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute to improve health outcomes and transportation safety on Kauaʻi.
Haleko Road connects Rice Street and the Līhu‘e Town Core to businesses and residences on the other side of Nāwiliwili Stream (including new affordable housing on Pua Loke Street), but its existing design is challenging for many road users. The project scope includes roadway rehabilitation and resurfacing, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and traffic flow enhancements. Specific design components will be developed during the design charrette based on community input.
The County invites the public to the following charrette events on January 13 and January 15, to share ideas to improve safety and accessibility along Haleko Road. The location of all public meetings will be the Pi‘ikoi Building, at the Līhu‘e Civic Center, 4444 Rice Street.
Dinner will be provided at both workshops. Please contact Patti@hiphi.org if you have any dietary restrictions.
