With the assistance of a helicopter, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists are working to upgrade a sesimic monitoring station on hardened black lava covering the crater floor near Uēaloha (Byron Ledge) of Kīlauea.

In an action inspired by last month’s birth of a monk seal on Mokulua island off of O‘ahu’s windward coast, the Board of Land and Natural Resources approved the temporary closure of wildlife sanctuaries statewide when necessary to protect endangered or threatened species.

The fire was deemed under control at approximately 2:30 p.m., and fully extinguished shortly before 3:30 p.m., leaving roughly 10 acres of land scorched.

Although opossums are less likely to carry rabies than other mammals, they are carriers of parasites and other diseases.

Kaua‘i police have reopened Kapa‘a Bypass and Olohena roads as of 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, as firefighters have cleared the scene.

Pilot Guy Croydon, 69, was flying a Robinson R44 helicopter operating with the tour company Ali’i Kaua‘i Air Tours and Charters, when it crashed for reasons currently under investigation, on Thursday, July 11. Also on board were passengers James Quintua, 60, and his wife Amy Nichole Ruark Quinta, 53. 

Fire Prevention Bureau is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

The federal government allocated $149.5 million to Hawaiʻi to fund internet infrastructure buildout to locations with no or substandard access.

One lane will remain open to accommodate alternating traffic in both directions. Access will be provided for residents in the area.

Power is being preserved in Waimea in order to support Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital and the established emergency shelter at the Waimea Gym. Waimea residents are encouraged to conserve power to the greatest extent possible.

The Department of Public Works and Kiewit West Infrastructure Co. will begin work on the road and bridge starting July 22 and will continue till April 11, 2025.
