Kawaihau one win away from Little League World Series after rallying past Arizona

A little league team from Kauaʻi is one victory away from earning a spot in the prestigious Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn.
The Kawaihau Community All-Star team from Kapaʻa — the Hawaiʻi state champions — will face Southern California in the West Region championship that will be played at 3 p.m. Friday in in San Bernardino, Calif. The game will air nationally on ESPN..
Kawaihau beat Arizona 5-2 in the elimination bracket on Wednesday to advance to the championship.
Kawaihau had previously defeated Arizona on Sunday in a 5-2 come-from-behind victory in its first game of the tournament.
For Kawaihau to make it to the Little League World Series, the team will need to beat Southern California — the same team that beat them 6-0 on Tuesday.
That defeat put Kawaihau into the elimination bracket.
The team’s run has also generated a wave of support back home on Kauaʻi. A GoFundMe fundraiser established to help support the All-Stars has continued to receive donations as the players travel and compete on the regional stage.
The team has raised more than $11,000 in donations so far.
The financial support comes as families and volunteers face the costs associated with an extended tournament run, including travel and other team expenses. Kawaihau Community Little League is a nonprofit organization based in Anahola that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship and personal growth through baseball.
The Little League World Series is scheduled for Aug. 19-30.
Until then, the team remains one win away.
