High surf advisory in effect for south-facing shores of Kauaʻi, Niʻihau

Forecasters with the National Weather Service issue a high surf advisory for south-facing shores of the Hawaiian islands beginning at 6 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Aug. 12).

A long-period south swell will fill in tonight and peak on Thursday at advisory levels and may linger through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, surf is predicted to build to 8 to 12 feet by Thursday, which will have a moderate impact. Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.

The high surf advisory is in place until 6 a.m. Friday and is not related to the incoming tropical storm, located east, south-east of the islands.

Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers are urged to heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution when entering the water.
