Authorities have identified a surfer who died in waters off a Kaua‘i beach park earlier this week.

Kaua‘i Fire Department responded to Hanamāʻulu Beach Park on Aug. 2 at approximately 10:30 a.m. on reports of an unresponsive surfer, who has since been identified as Bernard Matsumoto, 70, of Līhu‘e, next to his board, approximately 25 yards offshore.

Bystanders brought Matsumoto to shore and administered CPR until medics arrived and continued life-saving measures. All attempts to revive the 70-year-old were unsuccessful.

Matsumoto was transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death and any contributing factors. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play.
