AARP Hawai‘i is accepting nominations for 2026 Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors volunteers 50 years old and older sharing their experience, talent and skills to enrich their communities.

Deadline is Sept. 1 to nominate an outstanding person for AARP’s most prestigious volunteer award. AARP Hawai‘i will also donate $1,000 to the charity of the winner’s choice in their name.

“AARP Hawai‘i is excited to shine a light on volunteers who are using what they’ve learned in life to make a difference in the lives around them,” said AARP Hawai‘i State Director Keali‘i Lopez in a release announcing the nomination period.

Nominations will be evaluated based on how the volunteer’s work improved the community, reflected AARP’s vision and mission as well as inspired other volunteers.

AARP Hawai‘i Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must be at least 50 years old.

Achievements, accomplishments or services on which their nomination is based must:

  • Have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay. However, volunteers receiving small stipends to cover costs associated with volunteer activity are eligible.
  • Reflect AARP’s vision and purpose.
  • Be replicable and provide inspiration for others to volunteer.

Andrus Award for Community Service is not a posthumous award.

The following are ineligible:

  • Partisan political achievements, accomplishments or service.
  • Teams.
  • Previous Andrus Award winners.
  • Volunteers serving on the Andrus Award selection committee.
  • AARP staff members.

The award is given annually to honor people whose service is a unique and valuable contribution to society.

It’s named after AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus, who once said: “It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.”

AARP last year honored 49 outstanding individuals and couples throughout the nation.

Additional details and an online nomination form are available now at the AARP website.
