Kauaʻi County Department of Water, in partnership with Hawaiʻi Department of Health, is conducting free household tap water sampling and testing in Kīlauea, Hāʻena-Wainiha and Hanalei compliant with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Lead and Copper Rule.

Tap water will be collected and analyzed from participating customer homes, aimed at monitoring the risk households might face from exposure to lead in their drinking water.
The Environmental Protection Agency Lead and Copper Rule is meant to better protect children and communities from lead exposure.
Safe Drinking Water Act mandates water utilities must periodically collect and test water samples from a subset of customer homes to determine how much lead, if any, might be present in the water.
Tap water sampling and testing protocols were designed to better locate elevated levels of lead and in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency rule.
Customers participating in the complimentary sampling program will be asked to obtain water samples from their kitchen or bathroom cold water tap. Samples will be collected by county Department of Water staff for laboratory analysis, with results to follow.
A limited number of participants will be accepted through Aug. 5.
