Automotive batteries should not be disposed of at the County of Kaua‘i refuse transfer stations or the Kekaha Landfill.

The County of Kaua‘i Solid Waste Division reminds residents that automotive batteries cannot be accepted at its facilities because they contain sulfuric acid and lead, which can be harmful if improperly disposed of. Batteries can leak corrosive acid, contaminate the environment, and create safety hazards.

Residents can recycle used automotive batteries free of charge at locations that sell these batteries, including auto parts stores and other retailers. Many offer a store credit or a core refund when purchasing a new battery. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm availability and credit eligibility.

For more information on proper battery recycling, please call 808-241-4841 or visit the County of Kauaʻi website.
