Public comment on the Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice for an expansion project at Kauai’s only solid waste landfill, which is projected to reach capacity in four years, is nearing its end.
The deadline to submit written comments on the statement is Wednesday, according to a press release from Kaua‘i County.
The Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice for the Kekaha Landfill Cell 3 Vertical Expansion Project was published in the June 8 edition of The Environmental Notice, which started the 30-day review period. Since then, Kaua‘i County has hosted two public meetings in Kekaha on May 23 and June 24, providing attendees an opportunity to learn about the project, speak with County officials, and provide written and oral comments.
Feedback and submissions received during the 30-day public review period will help shape the scope of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement.
The Kekaha Landfill is Kauaʻi’s only active, permitted municipal solid waste landfill and is currently projected to reach capacity by 2030. To ensure uninterrupted, safe waste disposal for the island, the County of Kaua‘i is proposing the Cell 3 Vertical Expansion Project, which will add an estimated 10 years of capacity while the county continues the multi-year process to permit, design, and construct a new landfill.
