Construction work that will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at Līhuʻe Airport is scheduled to begin May 26, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation.
The project will upgrade the airport’s three existing curbside crosswalks and traffic signals in the passenger pick-up and drop-off areas to improve visibility, accessibility and overall public safety.
Construction will be completed in six phases, with one crosswalk closed at a time while the remaining two stay open for public use.
The number of available traffic lanes along the curbside areas will be temporarily reduced during the project, and motorists should expect possible traffic congestion.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, follow posted signage, use caution and comply with instructions from airport security personnel.
The project is expected to be completed in March 2027.
Transportation officials also remind the public that curbside areas are designated for active passenger pick-up and drop-off only. Drivers waiting for arriving passengers should use the airport’s waiting area until travelers are ready for immediate pickup.
