Fairies, mischief and courtroom drama will share the stage on Kaua‘i’s west side as a local theater group reimagines Shakespeare with a fast-paced, family-friendly twist in honor of the poet’s birthday.

For the past six years, Mark Jeffers of “Storybook Theatre Hawai’i” has brought the Bard’s works to life in Hanapēpē.

From May 14 to 17, Jeffers is doubling the fun — and the challenge — by condensing two classics, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Merchant of Venice, into a single performance running just over two hours.

Jeffers said he “cut the scripts down to create fast-moving, entertaining plots. We wanted something the whole family could enjoy.”

Over the years, Jeffers has shared stories with tens of thousands of children across Hawaiʻi, creating sessions that are interactive, memorable and educational.

This year, production features a cast of more than 30 performers, ranging in age from 6 to 70 and representing communities across Kaua‘i. Organizers say the intergenerational cast is part of what makes the annual performances unique, blending seasoned actors with first-time performers.
