University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa announces third finalist for chancellor

W. John Kao has been announced as the last finalist for the position of chancellor at the flagship campus and will visit the campus following Vassilis L. Syrmos and Amy Sueyoshi.

Kao, president of National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, was selected as the third finalist by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Chancellor Search Advisory Committee. He will visit the campus on Tuesday, May 4, and Wednesday, May 5.

To honor candidates’ requests for confidentiality, the names of the finalists were announced approximately one week before their scheduled campus visits. Vassilis Syrmos, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa interim provost, was named the first finalist on April 20, and Amy Sueyoshi, San Francisco State University provost and vice president of academic affairs, was the second finalist named on April 23.

Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members have been invited to attend open forums to meet all three finalists. Biographies and CVs for each finalist are posted on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa chancellor search website.

Kao’s forum will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, at the Kiawe Conference Room in Bachman Hall or over Zoom (ID: 884-9461-6302 and Password: 015992).

Syrmos had his forum yesterday and is continuing his official campus visit today. Sueyoshi will visit the campus on Thursday, April 30, and Friday, May 1. Her forum will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Kiawe Conference Room in Bachman Hall or over Zoom (ID: 859-8027-4989 and Password: 206404).

Feedback links will be available on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa chancellor search website starting on the first day of each finalist’s campus visit, which is when finalists will also meet with campus stakeholders and constituent groups.
