Traffic is once again flowing in Nāwiliwili after a key bridge reopened on Tuesday, but with a temporary twist.
The Kaua’i Department of Public Works and its contractor, Kaiwa Construction, announced that the Niumalu Bridge reopened to the public following the completion of construction of a temporary span.
The newly opened structure sits on the makai (ocean side) of the existing bridge and will serve as a bypass while crews prepare for a full replacement project.
Construction of the permanent bridge is expected to begin in 2027.

For now, the temporary bridge can accommodate vehicles with a 10-ton weight restriction. Officials are urging motorists to follow all posted signage to keep traffic moving safely and to preserve the structure during its use.
