Kaua‘i County Solid Waste Division announces the relocation of the scrap metal recycling bin at Kekaha Landfill.

The bin was moved to an area near the refuse drop-off location.

Scrap metal recycling is available at Kekaha Landfill in a new location now near the refuse drop-off location, which will allow for better monitoring of what is placed in the bin and ensure safety of employees hauling and processing the materials. (File Photo)

Heavy metal items such as riding lawnmowers will no longer be accepted at the new location and must instead be delivered to Hanapēpē Refuse Transfer Station or directly to Puhi Metals in Līhu‘e.

The change allows staff to better monitor materials being placed in the bin, as some recent drop-offs have contained prohibited items. Improved oversight will help ensure safety of employees who haul and process scrap metal.

The Solid Waste Division also reminds residents about the following guidelines for scrap metal recycling at Kekaha Landfill and all county transfer stations.

Scrap metal recycling areas do not accept the following items:

  • Pressurized tanks, including propane cylinders, fire extinguishers, acetylene tanks and other sealed containers.
  • Items containing fluids, such as fuel tanks, oil-filled equipment or materials not completely drained.
  • Batteries or items containing batteries, including electric bicycles and electric scooters.

Residents with propane tanks can dispose of them in designated propane tank collection areas at county transfer stations. These areas are separate from scrap metal recycling bins.
