Permanent Affordable Living — or PAL — Hawai‘i on May 2 is stepping forward for affordable housing in Hawai‘i and the community is invited to take that step, too.
PAL Hawai‘i is participating in the 2026 Kaua‘i Charity Walk, and it would love for everyone to join.

It’s a fun, family-friendly morning — and every dollar PAL raises goes directly back to the nonprofit affordable housing provider.
Even better: the more funds PAL raises, the more it receives from Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association. So community participation would literally multiply PAL’s impact.
Registration opens at 6 a.m., with breakfast provided. There will be group-led Zumba to warm up before the walk begins at about 7 a.m., which will be followed by brunch and entertainment after.
Ways to participate
Walk with PAL Hawai‘i:
- $50 adults (includes PAL T-shirt).
- $35 youth (younger than 18 years old).

“Let’s take steps toward a more affordable Hawai‘i — together,” said PAL Hawai‘i in its invitation to the community to participate. “Support PAL at Charity Walk 2026!”

It is the mission of Permanent Affordable Living Hawaiʻi to establish a foundation of hope by providing affordable homes and services for the people of the islands.
The nonprofit affordable housing provider is based on Kauaʻi and provides services statewide, serving houseless and extremely-low to middle-income workforce households earning less than 30% to 120% of the area median income.
“PAL’s unflinching mission is to create permanently affordable housing and keep longtime residents from leaving,” says the nonprofit’s website. “Our strategy is to place our projects into our Hoʻomaluhia Community Land Trust so they are permanently affordable for eight generations and beyond.”

The affordable housing provider’s values align with traditional Hawaiian manaʻo, or wisdom, that land is stewarded by the community — not owned for personal gain.
PAL doesn’t just plan for affordable housing when developing projects, it plans for affordable living; true affordability includes all basic needs — food, utilities, transportation, health care and employment.
Its projects are designed to make these essential components accessible through location, amenities, education and service enrichment.
The nonprofit uses development concepts that lower construction costs, enable long-term affordability and enhance community sustainability.
“Success is stabilizing houseless and low-income families with rental housing so they can eventually attain homeownership through financial education and supportive services,” PAL’s website says. “Progress is ensuring that middle-income workforce households of teachers, nurses and first responders — who still struggle to afford housing — can continue to live and work in the islands.”
PAL works to prevent displacement of the people — the lifeblood of Hawaiʻi.
“None of what we do is easy, but the aloha spirit is alive and well, and it drives us to move forward,” the nonprofit’s website says.
