An incident involving an electric motorcycle and a Jeep sport utility vehicle closed Kūhiō Highway in both directions for two hours on Monday morning.
A 38-year-old man from Hanapēpē was operating a 2003 Jeep sport utility vehicle northbound on Kūhiō Highway and preparing to turn left onto Kūamoʻo Road at approximately 5:50 a.m. Monday, March 16.
At the same time, a 42-year-old man from Kapaʻa was traveling southbound on Kūhiō Highway on an electric motorcycle. As the Jeep attempted to make the left turn, the vehicle struck the side of the motorcycle, ejecting the rider onto the roadway.
The operator of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries and was transported by medics to Wilcox Medical Center before being transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu for further treatment. According to preliminary reports, the operator of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the Jeep did not report any injuries.
Kūhiō Highway at Kūamoʻo Road was closed in both directions for approximately two hours while the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
