UPDATE: Flood advisory extended again as rainfall up to 1 1/2 inches an hour continues to overspread Kauaʻi

Update at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2026: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu once again extended a flood advisory in effect for the island of Kauaʻi because of continued flooding caused by excessive rainfall.

The advisory now is in effect until midnight Friday (Feb. 13).

Radar indicated at 9:28 p.m. today that a large area of rain continues to move in and overspread the Garden Isle from the southwest for the next hour or two.

Embedded heavier showers within the large rain shield were producing rainfall rates of up to 1 1/2 inches an hour.

Update at 8:13 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2026: The flood advisory in effect for the island of Kauaʻi is now in effect until 10 p.m. today (March 12) as flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.

Radar indicated at 6:52 p.m. a large area of rain moving from the southwest that will continue to overspread the Garden Island for the next few hours.

Embedded heavier showers and thunderstorms within this large shield of rain were producing rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour.

Minor flooding can still be expected on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams.

A flood watch also remains in effect. National Weather Service forecasters advise the public to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions and listen for later weather statements as well as possible warnings.

Story originally posted at 5:18 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2026: A flood advisory was issued Thursday afternoon for the entire island of Kauaʻi as heavy rain from a developing storm system is moving across the island, raising concerns about minor flooding on roads and in low-lying areas.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the advisory will remain in effect until 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

Radar at about 4:16 p.m. showed a large area of rain moving in from the southwest and spreading across the Garden Island, with thunderstorms producing rainfall rates of up to one and a half inches per hour, according to forecasters.

The Weather Service warned that the downpours could lead to minor flooding on roadways, poor drainage areas, and small streams as the rain continues into the night.

Weather officials urged Kauaʻi residents and motorists to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and other low-lying areas prone to flooding, where water levels can rise quickly during heavy rain.

The advisory comes as a broader flash flood watch remains in effect across parts of the state amid a storm system bringing unstable weather to the islands. The advisory could be extended if rainfall continues or flooding persists.
