Special marine warning issued for leeward, northwest waters of Kaua‘i
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a special marine warning for leeward and northwest waters of Kaua‘i in effect until 7:30 p.m. today (March 11).
Radar indicated at 5:26 p.m. showers capable of producing waterspouts located along a line extending from 15 nautical miles — or a little more than 17 miles — west of Lehua Rock to 67 nautical miles — or about 77 miles — west of Polihale, moving northeast at 20 knots — or about 23 mph.
Waterspouts and wind gusts of 34 knots — or nearly 40 mph — and possibly stronger are possible with the advancing line of showers.
Locations impacted include Lehua Rock, the southern tip of Ni‘ihau and Nohili Point.
Waterspouts can create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.
Seafarers and the public are advised to prepare for gusty winds, steep and fast-building seas and blinding downpours. Remember: stay low or go below, and make sure all on board your vessel are wearing life jackets.
