State Land Department divisions urge caution outside, on water because of severe weather

Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife and Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation advise residents and visitors throughout the islands to avoid outdoor recreation and take precautions on the water because of severe weather impacts from a powerful Kona low storm.

Flooded roads, falling trees and limbs, rockfalls and landslides are just some of the hazards associated with severe weather. Division of Forestry and Wildlife officials recommend avoiding outdoor areas exposed to hazards such as flooding, falling trees and limbs, rockfalls and landslides.

Outdoor recreation — including camping, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, etc. — during inclement weather puts not only yourself but first responders at greater risk in an emergency.

Area closures also could be implemented as conditions warrant.

Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation officials recommend boaters:

  • Check moorings/lines.
  • Bilge pumps.
  • Secure cabins and hatches.
  • Take other precautions as necessary to protect themselves, their vessels and marine resources.

Residents and visitors are advised to follow instructions of Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency and county emergency management agencies regarding preparations and safety precautions for heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, power outages, large surf and coastal surge.
