Nakashima named 2025 Employee of the Year for Kaua‘i Office of the County Clerk
Kaua‘i County Office of the County Clerk recently honored a staff member originally hired on a short-term basis who became a longtime critical part of the office team during her more than a decade of service.
Michal Nakashima was named the clerk’s office 2025 Employee of the Year, honoring her 15 years of service and dedication to the community, county and her colleagues.

“Congratulations Michal!” wrote Nancy Alayvilla Fontanilla in reply to a post on the Kaua‘i County Council Facebook page heralding Nakashima’s award. “Well deserved. So dang proud of you.”
She was one of several people and the council who congratulated the clerk’s office standout in the post.
Nakashima joined the clerk’s office in October 2010 as a short-term hire. Just 6 months later in April 2011, she transitioned to a full-time senior clerk typist position.
She plays a critical role as the initial point of contact for most constituents seeking information or assistance from the clerk’s office, establishing a friendly, positive initial encounter. That makes them feel at ease, especially for those people interacting with the clerk’s office for the first time.
“Her efforts create a sense of trust which sets the tone for future interactions and is an essential for forming a mutually respectful and courteous relationship with constituents,” said the council’s Facebook post.
Nakashima is also the clerk’s office point-person for iNovah, the county’s new cash deposit system, and assisted the Kaua‘i County Elections Division with the transition.
She even regularly prepares lunch for the office — going above and beyond her official responsibilities — to ensure everyone is fed, especially on council meeting days.
“Her generosity and thoughtfulness are greatly appreciated by staff, and some have even shared that they eat better at work than they do at home!” the council’s post said. “We appreciate Michal’s dedication to both constituents and the office and congratulate her for her many years of outstanding service!”
