Hiking party escorted off Kaua‘i trail after one of the members suffers an apparent seizure
A four-person hiking party was rescued off a Kaua‘i trail after one of the members of the group suffered from an apparent seizure.
According to a preliminary report from Kaua‘i Fire Department, personnel with the Hanalei Fire Station and Rescue 3 responded to the incident near Hanakāpī‘ai Beach along the Kalalau Trail shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 28.
According to a news release from Kaua‘i County, one member of the party, a 19-year-old female visitor, was reportedly experiencing dizziness and fatigue after an apparent seizure.
Upon arrival, first responders found the woman alert but tired and struggling to continue hiking. Firefighters provided hydration and evaluated the patient before assisting the four-person hiking party as they made their way out of the trail area.
Rescue personnel escorted the hikers safely back to the trailhead. The 19-year-old declined further medical treatment at the scene.
The scene was cleared shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday.
The Kaua‘i Fire Department reminds hikers to plan ahead, bring sufficient water, and monitor physical conditions when hiking the Kalalau Trail, which can be strenuous and challenging even for experienced hikers.
