Heavy Rain Causes Sewage Discharge into Kalapaki Bay
Approximately 200 gallons of secondary treated wastewater was discharged into Kalapaki Bay, Friday afternoon, March 12.
According to county officials, the discharge was a result of a wastewater spill at the Līhuʻe Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The spill occurred around 12:45 p.m. as a result of heavy rains in the Līhuʻe area.
The wastewater spilled and flowed into a drainage channel that runs through the neighboring golf course and into Kalapaki Bay. Golf course officials have been notified and signs are being posted at the river mouth at Kalapaki Bay.
The public is advised to avoid this area if possible. State of Hawaiʻi, Department of Health officials have been notified about the spill.
