Loyola Marymount swept both the team and individual honors at the 49th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Valentine’s Day, finishing 10-under-par for a five-shot victory at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.

Junior Trevor Algya claimed medalist honors, navigating gusty trade winds and wet conditions to secure the individual title.

“It was hard,” said Trevor Algya.

“The wind was blowing, making it a mental and physical battle,” Algya said. “It’s easy to let things go when challenges arise, but an awesome reward awaits when you remain
tough.”

It was Algya’s second collegiate win in Hawai‘i; he previously captured both the team and individual titles at the 2023 Kapolei Invitational on Oʻahu. Algya has been nicknamed “Hawaiian Sup’pa Man” by teammates in tribute to the late Hawaiian music legend Israel “Bruddah IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole.

“We had a fantastic week against challenging conditions,” said Loyola Marymount men’s
golf coach, Jason D’Amore.

DʻAmore is a former Lion and the only player in program history to earn first-team All-WCC honors in all four seasons. D’Amore said his team’s focus was clear from the start. “Our goal was to be the most mentally tough team. To come away with victory in paradise is something we’re incredibly grateful for,” he said.

No. 38 University of Las Vegas and No. 32 Texas A&M tied for second at 5-under-par, while No. 19 New Mexico finished fourth at 1-under. No. 42 Long Beach State placed fifth at 1-over, and No. 23 Utah came in sixth at 5-over. UNLV and Utah were the defending co-champions.

Other notable individual performances included University of Las Vegas senior Zach Little, a 2025 Burns co-individual champion, who tied for 14th (70-69-71). Utah junior Gabriel Palacios, also a 2025 co-individual champion, finished tied for 30th after rebounding from an opening 75.
