Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel on Friday (Feb. 6) rescued a 27-year-old man visiting from New York who suffered an apparent ankle injury while hiking the iconic — and strenuous — 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the island’s famous Nā Pali Coast.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded shortly after 8:40 a.m. Friday to the incident. First responders arrived at the Kalalau Beach landing zone and discovered the injured hiker.

Rescuers medically assessed the man at the scene and loaded him into the helicopter. He was taken to Princeville Airport.

Upon landing, he was transferred to Hanalei Fire Station personnel and American Medical Response for further assessment.

American Medical Response personnel then transported the hiker to a local hospital.

The scene was cleared shortly after 10:15 a.m.
