Kauaʻi firefighters assist injured visitor at Secret Falls Trail
Kauaʻi personnel assisted an injured 33-year-old male visitor on Saturday at the ʻUluwehi Falls Trail, commonly known as Secret Falls in Wailua.
According to the preliminary report, the incident occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Jan. 31.
Fire crews from the Kapaʻa and Līhuʻe fire stations responded, along with the American Medical Response team and several Good Samaritans. Firefighters arrived shortly after 11:55 a.m. and accessed the trail via the Kamokila Village parking area.
Responders were initially told the man had jumped into the water at the falls and struck his head on a rock. Upon arrival, crews found the individual walking along the trail with several bystanders.
Two Good Samaritans with medical experience had applied a wrap to the man’s head to control bleeding. Firefighters assessed and monitored the patient while escorting him out of the trail.
American Medical Response personnel met crews at the parking area, where they continued advanced medical treatment before transporting the man to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe for further evaluation.
The scene was cleared at approximately 12:45 p.m.
Officials with the County of Kauaʻi reminded residents and visitors to exercise caution when hiking or swimming in natural areas. They noted that trails and waterfalls can be hazardous, with slippery rocks and other dangers present even during fair weather.
