The Hawai‘i Lions are hosting their 17th annual statewide “Lions in Sight” Statewide Eyeglass & Hearing Aid Collection plus Food Drive, collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids this month and adding a food drive to help local and global communities in need.

Volunteers from hundreds of Hawai‘i Lions clubs, including the Kaua‘i chapter and youth LEO clubs, will staff collection sites across the Garden Isle on Jan. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon, accepting eyeglasses and sunglasses.

Additionally, this year, the Kaua’i Food Bank, along with the Kaua’i Independent Foodbank, will also be present collecting non-perishable food items, including canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, and juice.

The program encourages residents to comb through dresser drawers and closets during spring cleaning and donate any unused eyewear to the Lions Recycle For Sight program. Collected glasses are cleaned, sorted by prescription, and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable or inaccessible, including Afghanistan, Samoa, and the Philippines.

In addition to the eyeglasses, hearing aids will also be collected, cleaned, and tested for local distribution.
