Flood advisory issued for Kauaʻi amid heavy overnight rain

A flood advisory is in effect for Kaua‘i through 1 a.m. Wednesday, as heavy rainfall moving across the area is expected to cause minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained locations, according to the National Weather Service.
Late Tuesday evening on Jan. 20, National Weather Service forecasters reported a band of heavy showers moving over the island from the west. The system was producing rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with the potential for locally higher amounts.
Forecasters expect that the rain will continue through midnight.
The advisory covers all of Kaua‘i, where minor flooding may occur on roads, in poor drainage areas, and along streams. Officials added that conditions could worsen if heavy rainfall persists for an extended period.
Emergency officials are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution and avoid streams, drainage ditches, and other low-lying areas prone to flooding. Motorists are advised to watch for water ponding on roadways and to be alert for changing conditions overnight.
Forecasters added that the advisory may be extended beyond 1 a.m. if heavy rain and flooding persist. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and follow guidance from local officials.
