The public charger infrastructure, announced Wednesday (Dec. 3) by Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, is funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program and will be located in the library’s parking lot.

The library will remain open during construction and the state Transportation Department will provide safe access to the library entrance throughout the project.

Construction schedule is:

  • December 2025 through June 2026: Parking lot trenching and installation of underground utilities.
  • Library contractor will pave the lot after the utility work.
  • Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will begin installing electric vehicle charging equipment after paving is complete, with a scheduled 6-month break in construction, pending arrival of the battery energy storage system and electrical equipment.
  • Construction completion and opening of the NEVI charger is anticipated for February 2027.

NEVI chargers support CSS and Charge de Move connectors. The chargers will be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week once completed.

Payment and charger availability can be checked through the EV Connect app.

Payment by credit card is also accepted at the charger. QR codes will be displayed at the chargers for customers wanting to start a charging session with the mobile app.
