How much does a Thanksgiving meal cost on Kauaʻi?

It’s no secret that the cost of food on Kaua’i is high, but how much does it cost this year to buy a turkey and the sides for Thanksgiving?

Kauaʻi Now went to a few grocery stores to check out the prices.

On Friday, the Safeway in Kapa’a offered a 22-pound Butterball turkey for $2.49 per pound, bringing the total to $54.88.

At some Walmart stores on the mainland, Butterball turkeys were selling for just $0.97 a pound.

Green Giant cut green beans (14.5 oz cans) were being sold for $2.99 each, or 3 for $5 for Safeway members.

Stovetop Stuffing, a Thanksgiving favorite, is currently priced at $4.99 per box, or 2 for $6 — a savings of $3.98 on two.

For cranberry sauce, Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce is $4.50 per can or 2 for $9 for members, and $7.49 for non-members. For fresh cranberries, a 12-oz. bag is $3.99.

A 5-pound bag of Signature Farms Gold Potatoes is priced at $7.49, compared to $6.99 for Signature Select pre-cooked Garlic Herb bite-size potatoes.

Kīlauea resident April Joy Giraldi says her tip for families this Thanksgiving is to shop smart.

“I was at Walmart, and it seemed that the generic products were more expensive than here,” she said. “It’s also good to check Papayas and check the local farmers’ market.”

For the past several years, her top choice has been Safeway’s Signature Select Thanksgiving box, which she orders online every year. Customers choose their preferred proteins and side dishes online for a total price of $88.99.

The box provides enough food for a family of four.

“We celebrate the Sunday before Thanksgiving so that we can volunteer on Thursday at the Salvation Army,” she said.

“By serving, you are doing more than you can imagine, and they bless us more than we do them because it’s so much more than that, it’s a community,” she said. “That’s my heart.”

Members seeking additional assistance can also download the Klarna app. A shopping app that allows users to buy products and pay later through flexible payment options, like splitting purchases into interest-free installments or paying in 30 days.

Safeway is one of hundreds of companies that collaborate with the shopping app to assist those in need this holiday season.
