A 67-year-old visitor from Rhode Island died Thursday after being pulled unresponsive from the waters of Kalapakī Bay, county officials said in a press release.

Authorities identified the victim as Liming Xu.

Rescuers were called to the bay shortly after 12:30 p.m. following reports of a man in distress. Kaua‘i Fire Department crews and the U.S. Coast Guard brought the swimmer to shore, where first responders began CPR, according to officials.

Medics transported him to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhu’e, but he was pronounced dead despite continued attempts to revive him.
