Two drivers injured in U-turn collision that closed Kūhiō Highway near Princeville
Two people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision that temporarily shut down a portion of Kūhiō Highway near Kapaka Street, according to the Kauaʻi Police Department.
Officials reported that at approximately 3:15 p.m. when a 2024 Toyota SUV traveling southbound struck the passenger side of a northbound 2014 Chevrolet SUV that attempted a U-turn at the intersection.
The impact caused the Toyota to veer off the southbound shoulder.
Both drivers were taken to the Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe. Police said the Toyota’s driver, a 24-year-old Kapa‘a woman, was treated and released. The 79-year-old Princeville man driving the Chevrolet was admitted for observation.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes while officers from the Traffic Safety Section surveyed the scene.
Investigators stated that, based on preliminary findings, speed does not appear to have contributed to the incident. However, toxicology tests are still being conducted to determine if impairment was involved.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
