Employees, customers and members of Hawai‘i’s Walmart and Sam’s Club locations — including Līhuʻe Walmart on Kaua‘i — again stepped up in a big way this year, setting a high bar for supporting the health and well-being of the state’s keiki.

Out of more than 4,600 Walmart locations nationwide, Hawai‘i had six of the top 10 stores that raised the most money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

All Hawai‘i Walmart locations ranked in the top 30 fundraisers in the nation, including Līhuʻe Walmart. It was No. 19, raising $38,856.

Both Sam’s Club warehouses in the state ranked in the top 20.

Kailua-Kona Walmart on the west side of the Big Island, which was last year’s second-highest fundraising store nationwide, achieved its goal of being No. 1 in 2025. It raised a total of $113,955.

The store was packed in June and July with fun and engaging events to encourage customers to donate, and also organized a golf tournament for the first time, bringing together Hawai‘i Island businesses and community leaders to hit the links for a good cause.

Hilo Walmart — on the other side of the Big Island — claimed second place, bringing in $111,842. Kahului Walmart on Maui came in third with $78,483.

The state’s 9 Walmart stores, 1 distribution center and 2 Sam’s Club warehouses raised a total of $681,886 for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children — Hawai‘i’s only Children’s Miracle Network hospital — during their 2025 summer fundraising campaign.

One hundred percent of that money stays right here in the islands to support Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children care for keiki.

“We are so grateful to our associates and customers for bringing their compassion and commitment to help Hawai‘i’s keiki during our annual [Children’s Miracle Network] campaign for Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children,” said Hawai‘i Market Manager for Walmart Cole McConnell in an announcement about the fundraising campaign’s success. “We feel very connected to [Children’s Miracle Network] and Kapi‘olani Medical Center because family members of some of our associates have directly benefited from their care.”

Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children is Hawai‘i’s only full-service maternity, newborn and pediatric specialty medical center. It delivers more than 6,000 babies a year and provides numerous community and specialty services for patients throughout Hawai‘i and the Pacific region.

The nonprofit, 253-bed hospital in Honolulu — a Hawai‘i Pacific Health affiliate — is also home to the state’s only Pediatric Heart Center as well as Kapi‘olani’s Women’s Center, Women’s Cancer Center and The Sex Abuse Treatment Center.

Funds raised by Hawai‘i’s Walmart and Sam’s Club locations helped Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children purchase a new extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, which is used to provide life support to some of Hawai‘i’s sickest children.

That includes keiki suffering from heart and/or lung failure.

“The [extracorporeal membrane oxygenation] machine is a lifesaving tool, supporting both the heart and lungs for babies and children when they’re critically ill,” said Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children pediatric critical care physician Dr. Len Tanaka in the fundraising annoucement. “We are deeply grateful to Walmart and Sam’s Club because the improved technology of the new device will provide treatment closer to home instead of going to the mainland.”

Walmart and Sam’s Club’s fundraisers since 1987 have raised more than $1 billion nationwide for children’s hospitals.
