Gov. Josh Green today has ordered the flags of the United States and state of Hawai‘i to be flown at half-staff from Monday at sunrise to Wednesday at sunset after a church shooting in Michigan today.

The flags must fly at half-staff at all state offices and agencies, as well as the Hawai‘i National Guard, in solemn condolences to the victims of gun violence at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan.

According to reports from CNN, police have reported at least two people were killed and eight others were wounded in the shooting as of 12 p.m. HST.

Authorities said a gunman rammed a vehicle through the front of the church during a large service, began shooting and then intentionally set a fire that grew into a large blaze. There may still be victims in the church.

Officers exchanged fire with the gunman and killed him, according to police.

“Our hearts ache as we see the senseless violence that occurred again on the mainland, this time at a Michigan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,” Green said. “This epidemic of violence must be addressed. We need more mental healthcare for all of our people and we need to recognize that the divisive rhetoric, from all parties, is threatening to burn our country to the ground.”
