Two people in critical condition from single-vehicle crash into a large tree in Līhuʻe
The Kauaʻi Police Department is investigating a single-vehicle crash on Sunday in Līhuʻe that left two people in critical condition.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 21, when a white 2015 Nissan with four occupants was traveling east on Hulemalu Road, according to the police department.
The vehicle’s driver, a minor, failed to navigate a left-hand curve, which caused the car to leave the roadway and collide with a large tree. The police department’s Traffic Safety Section closed Hulemalu Road in both directions for about two and a half hours to conduct the investigation.
Two passengers remain hospitalized with critical injuries at Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe. The driver and another passenger sustained injuries as well, but they already have been released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine if impairment also played a role.
Because of privacy laws protecting minors, their identities are not being disclosed.
