Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green has ordered the United States and Hawaiʻi state flags to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol, all state agencies and offices, and at Hawaiʻi National Guard facilities across Hawaiʻi in honor of Patriot Day.

Patriot Day honors the nearly 3,000 individuals — civilians and first responders — who were tragically killed in the terrorist attacks on 9/11, 24 years ago. Thousands more were injured, and the devastating impact continues to be felt in communities across the nation.

The tribute will be held from sunrise to sunset on this Sept. 11.

“Today we stand with those lost, those grieving, and survivors who are forever burdened by the memory,” Green said in a press release. “Let their bravery and resilience inspire us as we extend our deepest condolences and consolations.”

Green’s order is part of a nationwide observance to reflect on the profound loss and enduring resilience that emerged from one of the darkest days in American history.

And, following the President of the United States’ direction, Green also ordered flags to be flow at half-mast at the same locations immediately through sunset on Sunday for the memory of political activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot Wednesday during an event in Utah.

“There is no place in Hawaiʻi or in our country for political violence,” Green said. “We may disagree on policies, but we must never allow division to turn into hate or harm. Democracy only survives when we resolve our differences through respect, dialogue and compassion.
