$3.9 million Hanapēpē road resurfacing project will begin Sept. 17

Kauaʻi County’s $3.9 million project to resurface the entire Hanapēpē Road from the east side of Hanapēpē Town to the Hanapēpē Bridge will begin on Sept. 17, according to a county news release.

The project will add crosswalks, improve safety measures at the intersections of Hanapēpē Road and Kaumualiʻi Highway, and increase the number of parking stalls.

On Thursday morning, the Department of Public Works and Hiʻilawe Construction LLC held a blessing in Hanapēpē for the upcoming project.

The work will take place on weekdays, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Single-lane closures will impact the west end of Hanapēpē Road, from the intersection at Kaumualiʻi Highway to Pūʻolo Road.

Sections of Hanapēpē Road, from the intersection with ʻIona Road and Hana Road to Kona Road, and from Kona Road to its intersection with Kaumualiʻi Highway on the east end, will also be affected.

Businesses will remain open during road construction. Access will be maintained, although entrances may be adjusted as the concrete and road work progress.

Drivers are advised to make arrangements for the necessary road and lane closures, use alternative routes, follow detour signs, obey flaggers and drive cautiously, allowing extra time to reach their destinations.

As the project progresses through Hanapēpē Road, additional traffic impacts are expected. Overall construction is projected to be completed by fall of 2026.

All work is subject to weather conditions, and no construction will take place on holidays.
