U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest, conviction or civil penalty for the illegal killing of a nēnē, or Hawaiian goose, earlier this month at a Kaua‘i military facility.

A nēnē, or Hawaiian goose, sits on her nest Jan. 9, 2024, at Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kekaha. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Law Enforcement is investigating the death of a different nēnē earlier this month at the Navy base that was allegedly shot and killed with possibly a pellet gun or .22-caliber rifle/pistol. Nēnē continue to be listed by the federal government as threatened under the Engandered Species Act.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service received a report July 8 that a nēnē was found dead near Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kekaha, allegedly shot with possibly a pellet gun or .22-caliber rifle/pistol.

An investigation into the goose’s killing is underway by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Law Enforcement.
