Ohio visitor rescued Kalalau Trail after suffering apparent ankle injury
Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel rescued a 27-year-old Ohio visitor July 15 from the famous 11-mile Kalalau Trail on Nā Pali Coast along the island’s northwest shore after the hiker was apparently injured following hiking more than a mile into the trail.
Kaua‘i first responders received a report about a distressed hiker shortly after 10 a.m., with personnel from Līhu‘e Fire Station aboard Air 1 responding to the incident.
The Ohio visitor was located about 1.5 miles into the trail, suffering from an apparent ankle injury.
Initial first aid was administered at the scene. The 27-year-old hiker was then short hauled to the Hanakāpī‘ai Stream landing zone, loaded into the helicopter and taken to Princeville Airport.
Upon landing in Princeville, the hiker was transferred to an American Medical Response ambulance crew for further medical care.
The scene was cleared shortly after noon.
