An increase of vehicle break-ins reported in the Wailua area is under investigation by Kaua‘i Police Department.

Unlocked vehicles and valuables left in plain sight are involved in many of the incidents. Police say common targets include electronics, wallets, purses and other easily seen items.

Kaua‘i Police Department — in an effort to prevent future break-ins — encourages the public to take the following precautions:

  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle: Ensure all valuable items are taken with you or stored out of sight in the trunk or glove compartment before leaving your vehicle unattended. Visible valuables increase the likelihood of a break-in.
  • Park in well-lit and visible areas: Avoid secluded or poorly lit parking spots that can provide cover for criminal activity.
  • Lock your vehicle: Always lock your vehicle and close all windows before leaving. Taking this simple step — even if you plan to be away for just a short time — can deter opportunistic thieves.
  • Report suspicious activity: Be vigilant. Report any suspicious people or activities by calling Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch at 808-241-1711. Call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency. Your prompt reporting can help prevent further incidents and assist in apprehending suspects.

Kaua‘i Police Department also encourages residents to register their external home security cameras through the City Protect program.

This voluntary initiative assists officers with identifying nearby cameras and helps expedite investigations while maintaining the privacy of residents; registration does not provide direct access to any camera systems.

Register your camera at the City Protect website.

Anyone who might have information about the Wailua vehicle break-ins is urged to contact Kaua‘i Police Department at 808-241-1711.
