Kaua‘i Humane Society joins BISSELL Pet Foundation to Empty the Shelters
Nonprofit BISSELL Pet Foundation once again wants to Empty the Shelters, generously sponsoring reduced adoption fees at 300-plus animals shelters throughout the nation in 40 states — including Kaua‘i Humane Society — to help pets find loving homes.
The BISSELL foundation — dedicated to ending pet homelessness — is putting out a call for pet adoption from July 5-19.
Kaua’i Humane Society’s Puhi shelter is participating, offering $25 adoptions for adult cats and dogs and a 2-for-1 adoption fee of $25 for all kittens and puppies younger than 6 months old.

“We are excited to be participating once again,” said Kaua‘i Humane Society Chief Executive Directory Ben Osorno in an announcement about the adoption event. “This event allows us to provide the community with more adoption opportunities, especially for our long-stay animals that we are hoping to find forever homes for. We have a variety of breeds, colors and sizes for all.”
Kaua’i Humane Society has participated in Empty the Shelters events since 2021; this July marks its 17th time. The society placed 38 pets in forever homes during Empty the Shelters in May.
Here are a few more key points to keep in mind about adoptions:
- Fees are waived for all senior dogs and cats.
- Fees are waived for all dogs and cats that have resided in the shelter more than 100 days.
- Hours are noon to 4:30 p.m. daily, except Thursdays. Walk-ins are welcome, but making a scheduled meet-and-greet appointment is recommended for those interested in adopting a specific animal for the smoothest experience.

“Shelters across the country are once again at a breaking point. They are facing record intakes and limited space. Too often, loving, healthy pets are at risk, but our communities hold the key to their future,” said BISSELL Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell in an announcement about the adoption event.
Bissell added that the summer Empty the Shelters event is more than about adopting a new furry friend — it’s a movement to support community shelters and save lives together.
“It’s an opportunity to change a pet’s life, and your own,” she said. “Together, we can give every pet the future they deserve.”
BISSELL Pet Foundation and Kaua‘i Humane Society urge families to research the pet they are interested in adopting as well as adoption requirements.
Since its inception in 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped more than 324,000 pets find loving homes. It is now the largest funded adoption event in the United States.
The program partners with more than 815 animal welfare organizations throughout 49 states and Canada.
