Synopsis

Moderate to breezy trade winds will continue through the week. Passing showers will mainly impact windward and mauka areas with light rainfall amounts.

Discussion

High pressure far northeast of the state will maintain moderate to breezy trade winds across the islands. Radar and satellite imagery this afternoon show clouds and passing showers embedded within the trade wind flow impacting mainly windward and mauka areas, with some enhanced activity over Kauai County.
Guidance continues to show a weak upper level trough lingering north of the state. This will help to enhance shower activity near Kauai through Wednesday where some weak instability nearby could allow for brief periods of moderate rain. Elsewhere, shower activity remains relatively modest, with passing showers expected across windward and mauka areas.
The upper level trough looks to linger northwest of the state through the weekend as upper level ridging develops to the east. Lingering instability could help to enhance showers at times across the islands, but no significant impacts are expected at this time. Otherwise, expect moderate to locally breezy trades with passing windward and mauka showers to continue.

Aviation

Locally breezy easterly trade winds will prevail across the Hawaiian Islands through tonight. Trades will continue into Wednesday, but may not be quite as strong as high pressure far northeast of the islands weakens slightly. A band of moisture embedded within the trades is forecast to move through late tonight into early Wednesday. This could increase windward and mountain showers, bringing occasional MVFR clouds and visibilities. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected to prevail at most locations.
AIRMET Tango remains in effect this afternoon for moderate turbulence below 8000 feet downwind of island terrain. This AIRMET will likely be needed through at least tonight as the breezy trade winds continue. Additionally, mountain obscuration may become an issue late tonight into early Wednesday as windward and mountain showers increase.

Marine

Easterly trades gradually diminish during the next several days as governing high pressure north of the islands slowly weakens. Moderate trades are forecast to prevail by Sunday. In the near term, the Small Craft Advisory for the windier waters of Maui County and the Big Island has been extended through tonight.
Barber's Point PacIOOS buoy registering peak values around 4 feet 15 seconds this afternoon closely matching expectations for surf associated with the existing S swell peaking just shy of the advisory threshold. Elevated surf is also noted along exposed shorelines of W shores. This energy will peak this evening then subside through the remainder of the week. A smaller S swell is modeled to arrive early next week.
Surf along E shores remains rough due to breezy trades but will gradually subside as trades weaken during the next several days. Surf along N shores remains tiny through the period.
Peak high tides associated with the lunar cycle will cause minor coastal flooding along shorelines and low lying coastal areas through Thursday. The Coastal Flood Statement remains in effect for the daily peak tide each afternoon and may be exacerbated by the current S swell.

HFO Watches/Warnings/Advisories

Small Craft Advisory until 6 AM HST Wednesday for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward Waters, Big Island Southeast Waters.
