Sen. Hirono, AARP to host telephone town hall
In an effort to honor the 90th anniversary of Social Security, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Hawaiʻi is holding a telephone town hall with U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and AARP’s Director of Financial Security Chad Mullen.
“Social Security is arguably the most successful government initiative in history,” said Hawaiʻi AARP State Director Kealiʻi Lopez. “We’re grateful to U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono for agreeing to be on our telephone town hall and answer questions from listeners about what’s happening in Congress to strengthen the program and protect its future.”
“Social Security is still doing what it was built to do, and AARP will do all it can to make sure that it is there for the next 90 years,” she continued.
More than one in five Hawaiʻi residents — 296,605 people — receive Social Security payments. The program brings $6.2 billion into the state’s economy and lifts 49,000 kūpuna 65 years old and older out of poverty.
The telephone forum is part of AARP’s efforts to protect Social Security and will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 31.
Call the toll-free number at 833-305-0175 to join the telephone town hall. Those who have participated in prior telephone town halls will get a call to join the forum.
There will also be a Facebook Live simulcast or recording of the event on the AARP Hawaiʻi Facebook page.
