Update: Flash flood warning, advisory canceled for Kauaʻi County
Update at 10:55 a.m. April 18: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has cancelled the flash flood warning and advisory for Kauaʻi County.
The heavy rain has ended and flash flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.
Update at 9:15 a.m. April 18: The National Weather Service in Honolulu raised the flood advisory to flash flood warning for Kauaʻi County until 11:15 a.m.
At 8:17 a.m., heavy rain over interior Kauaʻi with rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour was detected and water has been reported over the Hanalei River Bridge by Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency.
Flash flooding is ongoing or expected shortly. Flooding can impact drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties and other low-lying areas. Public road closures may be in effect in some areas and landslides are possible in steep terrain.
Emergency Management urges everyone to never cross fast flowing or rising water in a vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
They also suggest to stay away from streams, rivers, drainager ditches and culverts even if they are dry.
According to the National Weather Service, this warning may need to be extended beyond 11:15 a.m. if flooding persists.
Update at 4:58 a.m. April 18: Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Honolulu have extended the flood advisory for Kaua‘i until 8 a.m. as streams remain elevated throughout north, east and south portions of the island.
Radar indicated at 4:49 a.m. that rain rates and heavy showers over interior parts of the island had decreased to less than 1 inch per hour, but another area of heavy showers and thunderstorms is expecteed to move near southern Kaua‘i at about sunrise.
Original post at 3:26 a.m. April 18: Heavy rain falling over interior portions of Kaua‘i coupled with rising streams, even in areas where heavy rainfall has not happened, have caused the National Weather Service in Honolulu to issued another flood advisory for the entire Garden Isle.
The new advisory is in effect until 5 a.m. today (April 18)
Minor flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams, with additional heavy rainfall and stream rises expected throughout the early morning as radar indicated rain falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour over those interior locations.
The public is warned to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Meanwhile, surf along north and west shores has fallen below advisory levels this morning and will continue to decline through the weekend.
National Weather Service forecasters have accordingly canceled the high surf advisory that was in effect for those shorelines of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau until 6 a.m. today.
