Kaua‘i County Office of Economic Development launches new coconut rhinoceros beetle resource web page
The Garden Isle now has another online resource available to get vital information about an invasive scarab that threatens the island’s environment, agriculture and its very way of life.
Kaua‘i County Office of Economic Development launched a new coconut rhinoceros beetle web page that serves as a central hub for residents, farmers and businesses to learn how to identify the invasive insect, take action and report possible infestations.
“[Coconut rhinoceros beetle] is a serious threat to our island’s natural resources and local economy,” said Kaua‘i County Office of Economic Development Director Nalani Brun. “By creating this resource page, we aim to give our community the tools they need to be informed, stay alert and act quickly.”
It includes photo references of beetles and damage, tips for prevention, reporting tools and updates from local and state partners working to combat the spread of the coconut rhinoceros beetle.
The new web page also contains crucial information about how to detect the invasive beetle, what to do if you see it and where to find help.
“Community awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against invasive species,” Brun said. “We invite everyone to learn more on the website and stay connected with us on Instagram.”
The office uses its Instagram page to feature updates, tips and additional information about the coconut rhinoceros beetle alongside highlighting its other projects and initiatives.
