‘Fresh Look at Floral Design’ debuts on Kauaʻi public access TV and streaming
The Hawaiʻi Floriculture and Nursery Association debuted a 1 hour video titled “Fresh Look at Floral Design” in February on Kauaʻi’s public access TV Channel 54 and streaming on demand online at the Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Media website.
The educational program showcases higlights from the Hawaiʻi Floriculture and Nursery Association Fresh Look Educational Expo from Sept. 19-21, 2024, at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel in Hilo on the Big Island, with the theme “Fresh Look at Principles and Mechanics of Designing with Hawaiʻi’s Flowers.”
The expo included floral design demonstrations, presentations and workshops; nursery tours with floral educators; and more.
Professional floral designers including Hitomi Gilliam, Phil Rulloda and several others were at the expo and participated, taking a fresh look at the principles and mechanics of designing with Hawaiʻi’s flowers.
The program includes tours of nurseries in and around the Hilo area and debut of a newly named anthurium cultivar developed by University of Hawaiʻi College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.
Teresita Amore announced its name as “Hitomi Gilliam” in honor of Gilliam’s years of promoting Hawaiʻi-grown flowers.
An attractive white and green tulip-shaped variety with red highlights, the anthurium is perfect for transitioning between colors and useful in floral designs that blend tropical and temperate flowers.

There are many family-owned farms and nurseries that grow flowers and ornamental plants throughout the islands. They are an important part of Hawaiʻi’s economy.
“Buy Local. It Matters.” That’s the slogan for a campaign by the state of Hawaiʻi to encourage purchase of Hawaiʻi-grown products.
Purchasing locally-grown flowers and plants also helps protect the environment by reducing imports that sometimes carry invasive species.
